This route can stay on one chain while changing the asset. USDC on Ethereum is an ERC-20 token; ETH is Ethereum’s native asset. They may appear under the same wallet address, but they are not interchangeable balances and they do not pay transaction fees in the same way.
If you want ETH on a different network, choose that destination explicitly. ETH on Ethereum, Base and Arbitrum are distinct network selections in an exchange flow. The familiar ticker should not do all the thinking while the network label sits quietly underneath it.
01/Same address format, different asset
On Ethereum, a wallet can hold both ETH and USDC at the same 0x address. That does not turn USDC into native ETH. The provider’s final output needs to be ETH, with Ethereum selected if that is where you plan to use it. Wrapped ETH is another token choice rather than an automatic equivalent.
02/An empty gas balance can still matter
If your USDC is in a self-custody Ethereum wallet with no ETH, a standard outgoing USDC transfer can be blocked by the missing gas balance. Inspect the execution options the provider actually offers. Do not assume that every USDC-to-ETH route can solve the source wallet’s gas problem without a separate step.
03/Choose the network where the ETH will be useful
Receiving native ETH on Ethereum makes sense only if Ethereum is your intended destination. An application on another network may require native ETH on that network instead. Start from the destination application’s requirements, then select a matching route, amount and receiving address in the provider.
